In Memory of our co-founder, Matty Won Feb 11, 1949 - Apr 7, 2008, died of colon cancer. So this year, Irene (Matty's wife) is participating in an event to benefit Colon Cancer Coalition. Madison "Matty" Won, the Dragons Co-Founder, Executive Director, Coach and primary catalyst in instituting the Dragons basketball organization passed away in April 2008. Matty put forth tremendous passion and energy in developing and teaching youth basketball and promoting the Dragons organization. He lent his leadership skills, charisma and heart to others so others could experience the elation he held for the game Matty realized the need for an organization that could absorb Asian youths desiring to participate in this club atmosphere. In the year 2000, the Dragons started with seven teams and expanded to over 30 teams under his guidance.

Matty's love of the game was displayed by his coaching and practicing multiple teams, watching games of various Dragons teams, daily visits during our youth summer league and conversing with everyone about the bliss of the game.

Matty's name may be synonymous with the Dragons but he was much more than that. He was married to his beautiful high school sweetheart for over 35 years, a loving father of three children and a doting grandfather of two. He was an astute businessman, an avid outdoorsman, expert poker player and a wonderful friend. During the past couple decades, he coached many CYO and Dragons' championship basketball teams, ran a biannual adult open tournament, established a Friday morning recreational game and provided and played, in his descript, an "Old Man" summer league for his buddies and peers

He enjoyed punctuating all his activities with delicious and plentiful food, be it dining out or homemade potlucks. Upon dining, his one caveat was everyone's invited into his world. Matty prided himself on making the best prime rib and those who previously experienced that taste always anticipated his next prime rib dinner. Matty immensely fancied all the social aspects the world had to offer and he offered up more than his share of fun, merriness and laughter and openly engage others into his world.

Matty is missed deeply but the memory of him is everlasting. For every basket that drops through the net, the unbridled laughter, shared camaraderie and unequivocal delight that vibrates through our universe will somehow, someway find their way to Matty and he will find his way back to us.
